New Voices 2018: The Perfect Girlfriend

What a chilling page turner The Perfect Girlfriend is; it is brilliant and I couldn’t put it down. If you love a good psychological thriller, you won’t be disappointed and I urge you to go and pre-order your copy now.

Published on 8 March 2018, The Perfect Girlfriend tells the story of Juliette who is determined to get her ex boyfriend Nate back. Nothing will stand in her way to win him back; she even trains to become a flight attendant for the airline where Nate works so she can be close to him. Apart from changing her career, many of her actions are so subtle that I could actually visualise Juliette’s stalking behaviour happening in reality – that is what I found so unnerving. But even more unnerving is how Juliette justifies her actions to herself. The plot is really well thought out but crikey, it scared the bejesus out of me. I loved that; I found this book so compelling and couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I can’t say I liked Juliette; in fact I found her scary but to an extent I did have compassion for her. Karen Hamilton, the author of The Perfect Girlfriend gives us a snapshots of Juliette’s back story which to an extent explains her actions. As a reader I wanted to explore the character of Juliette more and still do – I find her fascinating.

The Perfect Girlfriend is Hamilton’s debut novel. She started writing following giving up her career as flight attendant. Yet she uses her in-depth knowledge from her career to great effect in this novel giving us the readers a real insight into the flying world and how taxing and lonely the life can be. Again, as a reader I found that fascinating.

I was lucky enough to meet Hamilton a few weeks ago at a book tour and she told me that as her life is so ‘wheels on the bus’, she wanted to create someone who is so horrible and so different from her – hence we have Juliette. At the time of meeting Hamilton, I hadn’t read The Perfect Girlfriend but now that I have I have so many questions for her. For example, will there be a sequel? I hope so!

Thank you Karen Hamilton for giving us The Perfect Girlfriend – since finishing it a few weeks ago I haven’t been able to stop raving about it and have been telling all my friends and family to go out and buy a copy. I loved it! Thank you also to Headline Publishing for inviting me to the New Voices book tour, giving me the fantastic opportunity to grab a copy to read and review and meet Karen (who was absolutely lovely).

This sounds like a page turner. I’ve got into psychological novels so will buy it to read on holiday. If I can keep it that long!
