Life Begins; a refreshing relationship drama

Life Begins proved to be such a tonic of a read for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, especially all the relationship dramas explored throughout the plot. For me, this book was easy to read in a refreshing and engaging way. It made me smile, warmed my heart and surprised me as it involved twists that I didn’t see coming. It also made me crave the sunshine, taking me away in my imagination from the dreary UK winter weather 🙂

Written by bestselling author Kate Eberlen, whose previous novel Miss You was chosen as a Richard and Judy Book Club Pick, Life Begins is an exploration of relationship dynamics we can experience throughout life; marriage, friendship, unrequited love. It is also a story about secrets and honesty, especially about being honest with one’s self.

Friends since university, Jessica and Robin are now in their early forties. However it is very clear to everyone, apart from Robin, that Jessica wants more than friendship. Even those closest to Robin are aware of the adoration Jessica holds for her happy, naive friend who possesses a somewhat Peter Pan approach to life.

And then there is Laura, a loving mother and dedicated assistant head teacher. Laura appears composed, successful and winning at life. But yet, she has her secrets; secrets that can blow the order of her life apart.

When Jessica takes it upon herself to plan an elaborate, belated 40th birthday bash for Robin, nothing seems to go as planned. As she ventures to Italy with Robin, along with Laura and others, all three are confronted with the deeply buried truths that could shatter everything.

Life Begins would have been a great, uplifting novel without the emotional twists throughout, but for me, these twists give it a great edge. Especially as a good few of these twists – and they are big ones – completely surprised me. I don’t want to mention anything more as I am scared of giving away spoilers! 🙂

Published by Orion on Thursday 30 January in paperback, Life Begins is an uplifting, thought-provoking read.
